Psalm 123 is a prayer for God’s mercy when His people are weary of contempt and ridicule. It teaches us to look to the Lord with humility, dependence, and patient faith.

1. Looking up to God — verse 1

“Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.”

The psalmist turns his attention towards God, who reigns in heaven. Although others may look down on him, he looks up to the Lord.

When troubles weigh upon us, this verse reminds us that our circumstances do not have the final word. God is still on His throne, and we can bring our burdens to Him.

2. Waiting upon the Lord — verse 2

The psalmist compares God’s people to servants watching the hand of their master or mistress. They wait attentively for direction, provision, and help.

“So our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.”

This is an attitude of humble dependence: “Lord, we need You, and we are watching and waiting for Your help.”

Waiting upon God does not mean doing nothing. It means continuing to trust Him, obey Him, and pray, even when the answer has not yet come.

3. Crying out for mercy — verse 3

“Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.”

The repeated appeal shows how deeply the people are hurting. They have endured so much contempt that they feel overwhelmed.

They do not pretend to be strong or hide their pain. They ask God for mercy. We, too, can speak honestly to Him when cruel words, rejection, or humiliation have wounded us.

4. Bringing the pain of ridicule to God — verse 4

The people describe being mocked by those who are at ease and treated with contempt by the proud. Those who feel secure look down upon those who are suffering.

Yet the psalmist brings that hurt to God rather than calling for revenge. The prayer seeks God’s compassionate help.

The chapter ends without describing an answer. Their pain remains, but their eyes remain fixed upon the Lord. That is a powerful picture of faith.

The message for us

Psalm 123 reminds us that our worth is not determined by how other people treat us. When we are mocked or misunderstood, we can turn to God, ask for mercy, and wait upon Him.

It also challenges us to examine our own hearts: do we treat struggling people with compassion, or look down upon them?

People may look down on you, but you can still look up to God.

Prayer:
“Lord, I lift my eyes to You. When hurtful words weary my heart, have mercy upon me. Help me to trust Your timing, follow Your direction, and treat others with the kindness I seek from You. Amen.”
