Matthew Chapter 3 — Simple Explanation
1. The Message of John the Baptist (vs. 1–6)
Matthew 3 begins with John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea. His message is clear and powerful:
👉 “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
- Repent means to turn away from sin and turn toward God.
- People came from Jerusalem and all around to hear him.
- They confessed their sins and were baptized in the Jordan River.
John was a bold, simple man:
- Wore camel’s hair clothing
- Ate locusts and wild honey
He fulfilled prophecy from Isaiah — “A voice crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord.”
2. Warning to the Religious Leaders (vs. 7–12)
When the Pharisees and Sadducees came, John did not flatter them. He warned them:
👉 “O generation of vipers…”
- He told them that being religious or being descendants of Abraham was not enough.
- God looks for real change (fruit) in a person’s life.
Key message:
- God can raise up children from stones — meaning He is not limited by heritage.
- Judgment is coming — pictured as:
- An axe at the root of the tree
- A fan separating wheat from chaff
John also spoke of Someone greater coming:
👉 “He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.”
This points to Jesus Christ.
3. The Baptism of Jesus (vs. 13–17)
Then Jesus comes from Galilee to be baptized by John.
John tries to stop Him:
👉 “I have need to be baptized of thee…”
But Jesus answers:
👉 “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”
Why was Jesus baptized?
- Not because He sinned (He had no sin)
- But to:
- Identify with sinners
- Set an example
- Fulfil God’s plan
4. A Powerful Moment — Heaven Opens
As Jesus is baptized:
- The heavens open
- The Spirit of God descends like a dove
- A voice from heaven says:
👉 “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Here we see the Trinity revealed:
- The Son — Jesus
- The Spirit — like a dove
- The Father — speaking from heaven
Key Lessons from Matthew 3
✔ Repentance is the first step toward God
✔ Religion alone is not enough — God wants a changed heart
✔ Jesus is greater than all — He brings true salvation
✔ God publicly confirms Jesus as His Son
In Short:
Matthew 3 is about preparation — preparing hearts for Jesus.
John prepares the way, but Jesus is the Way.
