Some time ago, I decided to buy flowers for my wife.
I went down to the local shop and saw a lovely bunch of roses sitting among other flowers in a pot. They looked beautiful, so I lifted them, went inside, and paid for them. The shopkeeper looked at me a little strangely, but I thought nothing of it. I was delighted—such lovely flowers at such a keen price.
That was last year… and I still have them.
When I gave them to my wife, she placed them in a vase—but without water.
A few days later, I asked her what she thought of them.
“Oh,” she said, “they’re lovely—but they’re imitation.”
Imitation… not real… a copy of the real thing.
Or, as we might say in Northern Ireland—fake.
Well, I thought, at least I won’t have to buy flowers again! They won’t die, wither, or fade… and they don’t even need water.
But the truth is, I had never intended to buy imitation roses. The price would not have mattered. The shopkeeper didn’t tell me, and there was no sign. I didn’t even stop to touch or smell them. I should have known better—but thankfully, this was not a life-and-death matter.
Yet there is something far more serious.
It would be a terrible thing to go through life believing in a religion, trusting in something you think will get you to heaven—only to discover too late that it was imitation… not real at all.
To enter eternity and realise you were holding onto something that had no life in it—no truth—no salvation.
Jesus Christ did not come to set up another religion.
He came to bring salvation.
As the hymn writer said:
We may not know, we cannot tell
What pains He had to bear,
But we believe it was for us
He hung and suffered there.
He died that we might be forgiven,
He died to make us good,
That we might go at last to heaven,
Saved by His precious blood.
The Lord Jesus did not come to condemn you,
but that through His death on the cross,
through His precious blood shed at Golgotha,
you might repent, turn to Him,
and receive Him as your Lord and Saviour.
The Bible says:
- There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12)
- Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11)
- As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God (John 1:12)
- For all have sinned (Romans 3:23)
- The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23)
- Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13)
Don’t settle for imitation.
Don’t risk eternity on something that only looks real.
Come to Christ—the One who gives true life.
