The Man at the Pool of Bethesda

A Story of Hope After Thirty-Eight Years

The Waiting Years

As written in John 5:2, “Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.” For thirty-eight years, the man lay beside the Pool of Bethesda. Each day followed the same weary pattern: he would watch the water, waiting for the moment it stirred. He had heard the stories, as had everyone else who came there. When the water moved, it was said that an angel was near and the first person in would be healed of whatever disease afflicted them. Yet, for all those long years, he remained just out of reach, unable to move swiftly enough, always overtaken by others. His hope, battered but not extinguished, clung to the edge of possibility.

A Place of Desperation and Hope

Bethesda was crowded with people who needed healing. The man, whose name history does not record, became familiar with the faces and the sounds of suffering. He watched children grow into adults, and saw the seasons change from his mat. Sometimes, he wondered if he would ever leave that place, if he would ever know life beyond the pool. Yet day after day, he waited, believing that something miraculous might one day happen to him.

The Encounter

On a morning like any other, the man heard a commotion—a stranger was walking among the afflicted, speaking kindly and moving gently between them. This was Jesus, though the man did not yet know His name. Jesus stopped beside him and asked, “Do you want to be made well?” The question seemed almost cruel in its simplicity. Of course he wanted to be healed. But he explained, almost apologetically, that he had no one to help him into the water when it was stirred; others always reached it before him.

A Miracle Unfolds

Jesus did not debate or discuss further. With compassion in His eyes, He said, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.” The man felt strength surge through his limbs, a sensation he had forgotten after nearly three decades of paralysis. He stood, hesitantly at first, then with growing confidence. He rolled up his mat, the symbol of his long suffering, and walked away from the pool. The people around him turned in shock and wonder; many recognised him as the man who had waited so long.

Life Renewed

The man’s life was forever changed. He left Bethesda behind, carrying with him not only the story of his healing but also the hope that endures even after years of disappointment. His encounter with Jesus was a reminder that hope is never wasted, and that even after thirty-eight years of waiting, healing can come in ways never imagined.
