The words “Only one life, it will soon be past; only what is done for Jesus will last” are not a direct Bible verse, but they express a strong biblical truth.
1. Our earthly life is very short. James 4:14 says, “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” We may live 70, 80, or more years, but compared with eternity, our life here is very brief.
2. Earthly possessions will not last. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:19–20 not to store up treasures merely on earth, where they can be destroyed or stolen, but to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” Houses, cars, money, possessions and earthly success must eventually be left behind.
3. What we do for Christ has eternal value. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:58, “your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” Serving Jesus, sharing the Gospel, helping others, praying, giving, showing kindness and faithfully obeying God may sometimes seem like small things, but God sees them.
4. Salvation itself is through Christ, not our good works. This is important. We do not earn heaven by doing enough good things. Ephesians 2:8–10 teaches that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works. Good works come afterward as the fruit of a life that belongs to Christ.
5. One day our lives will be examined before Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:10 teaches that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. And 1 Corinthians 3:12–15 describes our works being tested. Some things will prove worthless, while what has genuine eternal value will remain.
So the message is:
Life is short. Eternity is forever. We cannot take our earthly possessions with us, but a life given to Jesus is never wasted. Therefore, while God gives us breath, let us live for Christ and use our time to glorify Him.
As Jesus said:
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” — Matthew 6:21
