Psalm 107 is a great song of thanksgiving. It tells how God rescues people from many different kinds of trouble when they cry out to Him.
The central message is repeated throughout the psalm:
“Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.”
1. Give thanks for God’s goodness — verses 1–3
The psalm begins by calling God’s redeemed people to thank Him. God is good, His mercy never ends, and He gathers His people from every direction.
Those whom God has rescued should not remain silent—they should tell others what He has done.
2. God guides those who are lost — verses 4–9
Some wandered through the wilderness without food, water, or a place to live. When they cried to the Lord, He led them by the right path to a safe city.
This pictures people who are spiritually lost and empty. God alone can guide them and satisfy their deepest hunger:
“For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” — Psalm 107:9
3. God frees those in darkness — verses 10–16
Some sat in darkness and chains because they had rebelled against God’s Word. Their suffering humbled them, and no human being could rescue them.
But when they cried to God, He broke their chains and brought them out of darkness. No bondage is too strong for the Lord.
4. God heals those suffering from foolishness — verses 17–22
Some suffered because of their sinful and foolish choices. They became so weak that they approached death.
Yet when they cried to the Lord, He showed mercy:
“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” — Psalm 107:20
God can forgive, heal and restore us—even when our trouble results from our own wrongdoing.
5. God calms the storm — verses 23–32
Sailors encountered a terrifying storm. The waves rose so high that even experienced men lost their courage and wisdom.
They cried to the Lord, and He calmed the storm and guided them safely to their destination. This reminds us that God rules over creation and can bring peace amid life’s storms.
It also points us towards Jesus, who calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee.
6. God reverses people’s circumstances — verses 33–42
God can turn rivers into deserts when people live wickedly, but He can also turn a dry wilderness into pools of water and fruitful land.
He raises the poor and needy while bringing down proud rulers. Human circumstances can change quickly, but God remains sovereign over them all.
7. The wise should consider God’s love — verse 43
The psalm concludes by saying that wise people will observe these things and understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
Psalm 107 teaches us that whether we are lost, imprisoned, sick, sinful or overwhelmed by a storm, we should cry out to God. He hears, rescues and restores according to His mercy.
Its repeated call is:
“Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!”
God’s deliverance should always lead us to thanksgiving, worship and testimony.
