Psalm 117 Explained — All Nations, Praise the Lord

Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible, yet it carries a message for the whole world:

“O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord.”
— Psalm 117:1–2 (KJV)

Verse 1 — A Call to Everyone

The psalmist calls all nations and all people to praise the Lord. God’s love and salvation were never intended for only one nation. His invitation reaches people of every country, language and background.

The apostle Paul quotes this verse in Romans 15:11 to show that the Gentiles were also included in God’s wonderful plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Verse 2 — Why We Should Praise Him

We are given two great reasons to praise the Lord:

  • His merciful kindness is great toward us. God’s love is powerful, faithful and undeserved. Although we are sinners, He showed His mercy by sending Jesus Christ to save us.
  • His truth endures forever. People’s promises may fail and circumstances may change, but God’s Word remains true. He never changes, and every promise He has made can be trusted.

The Main Message

Psalm 117 begins and ends with the words “Praise the Lord.” It reminds us that worship is not limited to one church, country or race. One day, people from every nation will gather before God’s throne and praise the Lord together.

Though Psalm 117 contains only two verses, its message is enormous: God’s love reaches the whole world, and His truth will last forever.

A Thought for Today

No matter where we live or what difficulties we face, we always have a reason to praise the Lord. His mercy has not failed us, His truth has not changed, and His invitation of salvation is still open to everyone through Jesus Christ.
