Psalm 119 explained
Psalm 119 is a prayer about living close to God through His Word. The writer loves God’s commands, but he is also honest about suffering, temptation and his need for help. His message is: God’s Word gives us direction, strength and hope when life is difficult.
It is the longest psalm, with 176 verses. It has 22 sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Throughout the psalm, the writer uses words such as law, statutes, precepts and promises to speak about what God has said.
A few verses show its heart:
- Verse 11: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Knowing Scripture should shape how we live.
- Verse 18: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” We need God’s help to understand His Word.
- Verse 105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” God may show us the next step even when we cannot see the whole road.
- Verse 176: “I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant.” The psalm ends with humility: even someone who loves God’s Word still needs God to bring him back.
For us today: Psalm 119 invites us to do more than read the Bible. It invites us to pray over it, trust what God says, and follow Him one step at a time.
