Psalm 120 explained
Psalm 120 is the prayer of someone surrounded by lies and hostility. He wants peace, but the people around him keep stirring up conflict.
Verses 1–2: The writer remembers that God answered him when he was in trouble. Now he asks God to rescue him from deceitful speech.
Verses 3–4: He warns that lying words have consequences. The images of a warrior’s arrows and burning coals show how serious and lasting the harm can be.
Verses 5–7: Meshech and Kedar represent places where the writer feels like a stranger among hostile people. He longs for peace, yet when he speaks of peace, others are ready for war.
Psalm 120 begins the Songs of Ascents, a group of psalms associated with journeys to worship in Jerusalem. It begins that journey with an honest cry: “Lord, I am weary of lies and conflict. Hear me and help me.” The encouragement is that we can bring that weariness to God, as the writer did, and trust that He hears us.
