Psalm 99 Explained
Psalm 99 is a psalm of worship that proclaims the holiness, justice, and kingship of God. It reminds us that God is not only loving, but also perfectly holy and righteous. The phrase “He is holy” is repeated three times, emphasising that God’s character is completely pure and set apart.
1. The Lord Reigns (Verses 1–3)
“The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble.”
The psalm begins by declaring that God is King over all the earth. He sits enthroned above the cherubim, showing His supreme authority over heaven and earth.
The nations are called to stand in awe of Him because:
- He is greater than every ruler.
- His power cannot be challenged.
- His name is great and awesome.
The response of God’s people should be worship, reverence, and praise.
2. God Loves Justice (Verses 4–5)
God is not a King who rules unfairly. He loves justice and always does what is right.
He:
- Defends righteousness.
- Judges fairly.
- Establishes justice.
- Protects the weak.
This reminds believers that although the world often seems unjust, God’s throne is founded upon righteousness.
3. God’s Faithful Servants (Verses 6–8)
Three great leaders are mentioned:
- Moses
- Aaron
- Samuel
These men prayed to God, and He answered them.
God spoke to them from the pillar of cloud, guiding His people faithfully.
Verse 8 teaches an important balance:
“Thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.”
God forgave His people, yet He also disciplined them for their sins.
This teaches us:
- God is merciful.
- God forgives.
- God is also holy and will not ignore sin.
His discipline is part of His love.
4. Worship the Holy God (Verse 9)
The psalm ends where it began:
“Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.”
God deserves our worship because of who He is—not merely because of what He does for us.
Lessons from Psalm 99
- God is King over every nation.
- His rule is righteous and just.
- He hears the prayers of those who seek Him.
- God forgives those who repent.
- God disciplines His children in love.
- Above all, God is holy.
A Thought for Today
Our world often changes, governments rise and fall, and justice can seem delayed. Psalm 99 reminds us that God’s throne never changes. He is still reigning, still hearing prayer, still judging righteously, and still calling His people to holy living.
When we understand God’s holiness, we also understand His grace more deeply. The holy God who judged sin is the same God who made a way for sinners to be forgiven through Jesus Christ.
