Psalm 74
The Cry From the Ruins
The temple walls lay broken down,
The smoke rose high above the town.
The holy place was scarred by flame,
And enemies mocked God’s holy name.
“O Lord, why do You seem so far?
Why hide beyond the evening star?
Your people weep, Your flock is torn,
Our hearts are weary, bruised, and worn.”
The sanctuary once filled with praise,
Now stood in silence through the days.
The songs had ceased, the harps were still,
Yet faith remained despite the ill.
The wicked boasted in their pride,
Thinking God had stepped aside.
They laughed and said, “Where is your King?”
As sorrow’s bells began to ring.
But then the Psalmist raised his eyes,
Beyond the tears and darkened skies.
He remembered God’s mighty hand,
That formed the sea and shaped the land.
The Lord divided mighty seas,
And calmed the storms with sovereign ease.
He made the sun, the moon, the light,
And rules the day as well as night.
The seasons move at His command,
The oceans stay where He has planned.
The stars still march across the sky,
Because the Lord is God Most High.
Though temples fall and kingdoms fade,
God’s throne remains and is not swayed.
Though enemies may rage and roar,
The Lord still reigns forevermore.
“Arise, O God!” the Psalmist cried,
“Stand with Your people at Your side.
Remember those who trust Your name,
And let Your glory shine again.”
And so this ancient song still speaks,
To troubled hearts and souls that seek.
When life seems filled with loss and pain,
Remember God still holds the reins.
The ruins are not where stories end,
For God restores, rebuilds, and mends.
The night may linger for a while,
But dawn returns with Heaven’s smile.
So trust the Lord through storm and strife,
The Author of eternal life.
For though the world may shake and fall,
The King of Glory rules it all.
