The God Who Reigns
A Sermon on Psalm 76
Text: Psalm 76
Psalm 76 is a song of praise written by Asaph. It reminds us that our God is not weak, absent, or defeated. He is the God who reigns over nations, kings, armies, and the affairs of men. When the world appears to be in turmoil and evil seems to prosper, Psalm 76 lifts our eyes heavenward and declares, “God is still on the throne.”
The psalm begins by telling us that God is known in Judah and that His name is great in Israel. God had revealed Himself to His people, and they knew Him not merely by name but by experience. The greatest need in our day is not simply religion, but a personal knowledge of God. A nation may know about God, but God’s desire is that people know Him personally.
Asaph then speaks of God breaking the arrows, shields, swords, and weapons of war. Victory did not come through the strength of Israel but through the power of God. Throughout history, armies have risen and fallen, kingdoms have come and gone, but the Lord remains unchanged. The believer’s confidence is not in human strength, wealth, or governments, but in the Lord who never fails.
The psalm reminds us that God is glorious and mighty. The strongest warriors were unable to stand when God arose in judgment. One word from the Lord silences the proud. Men may boast in their achievements and rulers may exalt themselves, but there is One above them all. God humbles the proud and exalts the humble.
Verse seven says,
“Thou, even thou, art to be feared.”
This is not a fear of terror for the child of God, but a fear of reverence and awe. We live in a world that has lost its respect for God, but the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. When we understand who God is, we learn to trust Him, obey Him, and worship Him with thankful hearts.
One of the most encouraging verses is verse ten:
“Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee.”
Men may oppose God, reject Him, and seek their own way, but even their rebellion cannot frustrate His plans. Joseph’s brothers meant evil against him, but God turned it into good. The cross itself appeared to be Satan’s victory, but through the death and resurrection of Christ came salvation to the world. God is able to bring blessing out of sorrow and hope out of despair.
The psalm ends with a call to worship and honour the Lord. Kings and princes may possess authority for a season, but God alone is King forever. Every crown will one day be laid at His feet. Every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Perhaps today you are facing battles you cannot win by your own strength. Remember Psalm 76. The God who broke the weapons of the enemy still reigns. He has not changed. He is able to defend His people, strengthen the weak, and bring peace to troubled hearts.
Lift up your eyes. Do not place your trust in men or circumstances. Put your confidence in the Lord.
For our God reigns.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the mighty God who reigns above all. When we are fearful, remind us that You are our refuge and strength. Teach us to trust You, to walk humbly before You, and to worship You with reverence and joy. Thank You that nothing can overthrow Your purposes and that through Jesus Christ we have victory. In His precious name we pray. Amen.
