When God’s Footprints Are Unseen

Psalm 77 Sermon

Text: “Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.” — Psalm 77:19

There are times in life when the heavens seem silent. We pray, but answers do not come quickly. We remember happier days and wonder, “Lord, where are You?” Psalm 77 is a song for those dark nights of the soul.

Asaph, the writer, begins with tears and questions. He cries unto God and cannot find comfort. His mind is troubled and sleep escapes him. He wonders if God’s mercy has ended and if His promises have failed. Many of God’s people have walked through such valleys. Even faithful believers sometimes struggle to understand the ways of God.

Yet the turning point comes when Asaph changes his focus. Instead of looking only at his pain, he begins to remember the works of the Lord. He recalls God’s faithfulness, His miracles, and His mighty power. He remembers how God brought Israel through the Red Sea and delivered them from bondage.

God’s people saw the waters part, but they could not see God’s footprints. His hand was guiding them, even though His presence was invisible. So it is with us. We may not understand the path we are on, but God has not abandoned us. His footprints may be unseen, but His love is unchanged.

Perhaps today you are carrying a burden, facing sickness, grief, loneliness, or unanswered prayers. Psalm 77 reminds us that our feelings change, but God’s character does not. The God who was faithful yesterday is faithful today and will be faithful tomorrow.

When the night is dark, remember His goodness.
When fear comes, remember His promises.
When tears fall, remember His faithfulness.

The God who led Israel through the sea is the same God who walks with His children today. Though we may not always trace His hand, we can trust His heart.

Conclusion

Child of God, do not judge God’s love by your circumstances. Remember His past mercies. Recall His faithfulness. The Lord has not forgotten you.

His footprints may be unseen, but His presence is real.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, when doubts arise and the night seems long, help us to remember Your mighty works. Strengthen our faith when we cannot see the way ahead. Teach us to trust You even when Your footprints are unseen. Thank You that You never leave nor forsake Your people. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“He is still leading, even when His footprints are unseen.” – Psalm 77.
