Psalm 104 Explained
Psalm 104 is a magnificent song of praise to God as Creator, Provider, and Sustainer of all life. It looks at the heavens, earth, water, animals, plants, seasons, and mankind and declares that everything depends upon God.
1. God is clothed with majesty — verses 1–4
The psalm begins:
“Bless the LORD, O my soul.”
The writer pictures God as clothed with honour, majesty, and light. The heavens themselves demonstrate His greatness. God is not part of creation—He is the One who made it.
Lesson: When we look at the beauty and vastness of creation, it should lead us to worship the Creator.
2. God established the earth — verses 5–9
The psalm describes God establishing the earth and controlling the waters. The seas have boundaries because God has appointed their place.
This reminds us that creation is not outside God’s authority. The oceans, mountains and valleys are all under His command.
3. God provides for His creatures — verses 10–18
God sends springs into the valleys, giving water to animals. Birds find places to live, grass grows for cattle, and crops provide food for mankind.
Psalm 104 shows God’s care extending even to creatures that people may hardly notice.
Lesson: God’s provision is visible throughout creation. Every meal and every necessary resource ultimately depends upon what God has provided.
4. God established times and seasons — verses 19–23
The moon marks the seasons, and the sun knows when to set. Night provides a time for many animals to hunt, while daylight is the time when people go out to work.
There is order and purpose in God’s creation.
5. “O LORD, how manifold are thy works!” — verses 24–26
This is one of the great declarations of the psalm:
“O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all.” — Psalm 104:24
The psalmist looks at the enormous variety of life and recognizes God’s wisdom behind it.
From the smallest creature to the greatest sea creature, creation points beyond itself to its Maker.
6. Every living thing depends upon God — verses 27–30
All creatures look to God for their food. When God provides, they are satisfied. When life ends, they return to the dust.
Then comes a wonderful picture of God’s life-giving power:
“Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.”
Lesson: We are not independent of God. Every breath and every day of life is a gift from Him.
7. May God rejoice in His works — verses 31–35
The psalm ends where it began—with worship.
The writer declares:
“I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live.”
He doesn’t merely admire creation; creation causes him to praise God.
The message of Psalm 104
Psalm 104 teaches us that God created the world, God rules the world, God provides for the world, and all life depends upon Him.
We can look at the sunrise, the rain, the fields, the birds, the animals, the sea and even our own breath and say:
“Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.” — Psalm 104:35
