Psalm 116: The Lord Heard My Cry

Psalm 116 is a personal song of thanks. The writer faced a frightening time when death seemed close. He called on the Lord, and the Lord heard him and brought him through it. His response was love, gratitude, and a renewed desire to serve God.

In verses 1–4, the writer says, “I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.” He does not hide how distressed he was. He simply cries, “O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.” It reminds us that prayer need not be polished. We can call on God honestly when we are afraid.

In verses 5–11, he praises the Lord’s mercy. God cared for him when he was brought low. The words “Return unto thy rest, O my soul” show someone speaking to his own troubled heart after experiencing God’s help. He had suffered, but he could now remember that the Lord had dealt generously with him.

In verses 12–19, gratitude becomes action: “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?”The writer cannot repay God for His mercy. Instead, he will call on the Lord, fulfil his vows, and thank Him openly among His people.

Verse 15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” This does not mean death is painless or that God delights in our grief. It means the lives and deaths of His people matter deeply to Him; they are never forgotten or insignificant.

For us today, Psalm 116 is an encouragement to bring our troubles to the Lord and to remember His kindness. When He carries us through a difficult time, we can say with the psalmist: “I will call upon the name of the LORD.”
