Psalm 70 Explained

Psalm 70 is a short but powerful prayer of King David. It is a cry for urgent help when trouble, enemies, and difficulties surround him. David does not give a long speech; instead, he calls upon God immediately.

Verse 1

“Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Lord.”

David begins by asking God to come quickly. He knows that his help cannot be found in his own strength but in the Lord alone.

Verses 2–3

David prays that those who seek to harm him will be ashamed and disappointed. He is not seeking personal revenge; he is asking God to deal justly with those who oppose righteousness.

Verse 4

“Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee.”

While David speaks about his enemies, he also thinks about God’s people. He wants those who love the Lord to rejoice and continually say:

“Let God be magnified!”

This is one of the great themes of the Psalm. No matter what is happening, God is worthy of praise.

Verse 5

“But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God.”

David ends where he began—with dependence upon God. Though he was a king, he recognized his spiritual need. He confesses that God is:

  • His Help
  • His Deliverer
  • His Hope

Main Lessons from Psalm 70

  1. God is our first call in trouble.
David did not run first to people; he ran to God.
  2. There is nothing wrong with urgent prayer.
Sometimes life brings situations where we must cry, “Lord, help me now!”
  3. God’s people should magnify Him.
Even in trials, we can still praise the Lord.
  4. Humility brings us closer to God.
David admitted he was needy and dependent on the Lord.

A Simple Thought

Psalm 70 reminds us that when life becomes overwhelming, we do not need fancy words. We can simply pray:

“Lord, I need You. Come quickly and help me.”

And the God who helped David is the same God who hears His children today.

Key Verse:
“Let God be magnified.” — Psalm 70:4

That is the heart of the Psalm: In every trouble, look to God, trust God, and magnify God.
