Psalm 71 Explained
Psalm 71 is a prayer of trust, especially from someone who is older and has walked with God for many years. The writer looks back on God’s faithfulness throughout life and asks for strength and protection in old age.
Theme of the Psalm
“Lord, You have been faithful all my life—do not leave me now.”
The psalm teaches us that God is not only the God of our youth but also the God of our old age.
Verses 1–3: A Refuge in Trouble
David begins by declaring his trust in the Lord.
“In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust.”
He asks God to rescue him from his enemies and be his strong refuge. David knows that human help can fail, but God never fails.
Verses 4–8: Trust Since Childhood
David remembers how God cared for him from his earliest days.
“By thee have I been holden up from the womb.”
He recognizes that every blessing, every protection, and every victory came from God.
This teaches us to look back and count God’s faithfulness in our own lives.
Verses 9–13: A Prayer for Old Age
David prays:
“Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.”
As people grow older, physical strength may decline, but God’s strength never declines. David’s enemies think God has abandoned him, but David knows better.
Verses 14–18: A Determination to Praise God
David refuses to give up.
“But I will hope continually.”
He commits himself to praising God more and more. He also desires to tell the next generation about God’s power and faithfulness.
This is a beautiful picture of older believers passing their faith to younger generations.
Verses 19–21: God’s Greatness
David praises the greatness of God.
“O God, who is like unto thee!”
He remembers past troubles and believes God will bring him through future troubles as well.
Verses 22–24: Ending in Praise
The psalm closes with worship.
David praises God with music, singing, and thanksgiving because God has delivered him and remained faithful.
Lessons from Psalm 71
1. God is faithful throughout life.
Whether young or old, God remains the same.
2. Never stop trusting God.
David faced troubles late in life, yet he continued to hope.
3. Older believers have an important ministry.
David wanted to tell the next generation about God’s works.
4. Praise should increase with age.
The more we see God’s faithfulness, the more reason we have to worship Him.
5. God never abandons His children.
Even when strength fails, God’s presence remains.
A Simple Summary
Psalm 71 is the testimony of a believer who can look back over many years and say:
“Lord, You carried me when I was young. You helped me through every trial. Now that I am older, I still trust You. Give me strength to keep praising You and to tell others of Your goodness until my life’s journey is complete.”
