Sermon on Psalm 78
“Remember the Works of God”
Text: Psalm 78:4
“We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength, and His wonderful works that He hath done.”
Introduction
Psalm 78 was written by Asaph. It is a history lesson wrapped in a song. God wanted His people not only to remember His mighty acts, but also to teach them to their children. Sadly, Israel often forgot the goodness of God, and forgetting led to unbelief and disobedience.
The message of Psalm 78 is clear:
Remember God’s faithfulness, trust His promises, and pass His truth to the next generation.
1. Tell the Next Generation About God
God never intended faith to stop with one generation. Parents, grandparents, pastors, and believers are all called to speak of God’s goodness.
Children need to hear:
- That God answers prayer.
- That God forgives sinners.
- That God is faithful in every season.
- That Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world.
The world is teaching our children many things, but the Church must continue to teach them the Word of God.
2. Beware of Spiritual Forgetfulness
Israel saw miracles:
- The Red Sea parted.
- Manna fell from heaven.
- Water came from the rock.
Yet they complained and doubted.
How easy it is to forget yesterday’s blessings when today’s troubles appear.
When we forget God’s goodness:
- Fear replaces faith.
- Complaining replaces thanksgiving.
- Doubt replaces trust.
David said in Psalm 103:2,
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
3. God Is Merciful Even When We Fail
Again and again Israel rebelled, yet God showed mercy.
Psalm 78:38 says:
“But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not.”
What a wonderful God!
We may fail Him, but His love remains steadfast. He is patient with His children and ready to forgive those who turn back to Him.
At Calvary, God’s mercy was fully revealed through the Lord Jesus Christ.
4. God Still Raises Up Shepherds
The Psalm ends with God choosing David to shepherd His people.
David was not perfect, but he had a heart after God.
Today our Great Shepherd is the Lord Jesus Christ.
He leads us:
- Through dark valleys.
- Through trials and sorrows.
- Into green pastures.
- Into eternal life.
Jesus said,
“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)
Conclusion
Psalm 78 teaches us:
- Remember God’s goodness.
- Teach His truth to others.
- Do not repeat the mistakes of unbelief.
- Trust in His mercy.
- Follow the Good Shepherd.
Let us leave a testimony for those who come after us, so that our children and grandchildren will know that God is faithful, God is good, and His mercy endures forever.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness throughout the generations. Help us never to forget Your goodness. Teach us to trust You in every circumstance and to pass Your truth on to others. Keep us close to the Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ, and may our lives bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
