Sermon on Psalm 75

“God Is the Judge”

Text: Psalm 75

We live in a world where people often ask, “Where is justice?” The wicked seem to prosper, the righteous sometimes suffer, and many wonder if God sees what is happening. Psalm 75 reminds us that heaven has not lost control. God is still on the throne, and He is the righteous Judge.

The psalm begins with thanksgiving:

“Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks.”

Before speaking of judgment, God’s people give thanks. It is easy to thank God when life is pleasant, but true faith thanks Him even while waiting for answers. Gratitude is not based on circumstances but on the character of God.

Then God speaks:

“When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.”

God’s timing is perfect. Men may delay justice, but God never forgets. Though evil may appear to flourish for a season, the Lord has appointed a day when everything will be made right. His judgments are never hasty, never unfair, and never mistaken.

The Lord says:

“The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it.”

When the world seems to be shaking, God is holding it together. Nations rise and fall, economies change, and circumstances may trouble our hearts, but God has not abandoned His throne. He still upholds His creation.

God then warns the proud:

“Lift not up your horn on high.”

Pride has ruined many lives. Nebuchadnezzar learned that kingdoms belong to God. Herod learned that glory belongs to God. Lucifer himself fell because of pride. The Lord resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Psalm 75 teaches us that promotion does not come from men:

“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.”

We live in a world that seeks recognition and status, but God’s people must remember that our future is in His hands. We do not need to push ourselves forward. We need only to be faithful, for God knows how and when to exalt His servants.

The psalm speaks of a cup in the hand of the Lord. This cup symbolizes God’s righteous judgment upon sin. One day, the wicked will answer before Him. Yet, there is another cup we remember—the cup our Lord Jesus Christ drank on Calvary. He bore the wrath that we deserved so that sinners might receive mercy through faith in Him.

The psalm closes with hope:

“But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.”

The wicked may have power for a time, but their strength will be cut off. The righteous, however, shall be lifted up by the Lord.

Therefore, let us not envy the wicked, nor become discouraged by the condition of the world. Let us give thanks, walk humbly, trust God’s timing, and leave judgment in His hands.

For God is still on the throne.

“He putteth down one, and setteth up another.”
Psalm 75:7

Amen.
