The Bible does make a distinction between forgiveness and trust or respect. They are related, but they are not the same thing.

Jesus taught that we are to forgive those who sin against us. When Peter asked how often he should forgive, Jesus answered, “seventy times seven” (see Gospel of Matthew 18:21–22). Forgiveness means we choose not to hold bitterness, hatred, or a desire for revenge in our hearts. We leave justice in God’s hands.

However, respect and trust are earned through consistent character and faithfulness.

The Bible also says:

• “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches” (Book of Proverbs 22:1). A good reputation is built over time.
• “By their fruits you shall know them” (Gospel of Matthew 7:16). Jesus taught that a person’s actions reveal their true character.
• “Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). Christians are called to be loving, but also discerning.

If someone repeatedly lies, abuses trust, or behaves dishonestly, you may forgive them completely while still recognising that trust needs to be rebuilt. Forgiveness can be given immediately, but rebuilding confidence often takes time and genuine repentance.

A simple way to put it is:

• Forgiveness is something I choose to give because Christ forgave me.
• Trust is something the other person rebuilds through honesty and changed behaviour.
• Respect grows from integrity, humility, and faithful conduct.

Even God illustrates this principle. He forgives those who genuinely repent, but throughout Scripture there are still consequences for sin. David was forgiven after his sin with Bathsheba, yet the consequences remained (see 2 Samuel 12). Forgiveness did not erase every earthly result.

So, forgiveness does not mean pretending the wrong never happened, ignoring wisdom, or automatically restoring someone to a position of trust. It means releasing the offence to God while allowing trust and respect to be restored only as a person’s life demonstrates genuine change.

A good summary is:

Forgiveness is commanded by God. Trust is built by faithfulness. Respect is earned by character. Christians are called to forgive everyone, but the Bible does not require us to ignore wisdom or overlook a person’s actions.
