The Lord Reigns

A Sermon on Psalm 97

Text: “The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.” — Psalm 97:1 (KJV)

Introduction

We live in a world filled with uncertainty. Governments change, economies fluctuate, wars rage, and hearts are troubled. Yet Psalm 97 begins with a wonderful declaration that changes everything:

“The Lord reigneth.”

The psalm does not say the Lord will reign someday—it declares that He reigns now. God is still seated upon His throne. Nothing has taken Him by surprise, and nothing can overthrow His kingdom.

Today let us consider three great truths from this psalm.

1. The Lord Reigns Over All the Earth

Psalm 97:1–6

The psalm opens with majesty.

Clouds and darkness surround Him.
Fire goes before Him.
Lightning lights up the earth.
The mountains melt like wax before His presence.

These are pictures of God’s holiness, power, and glory.

When God came down on Mount Sinai, there were thunderings, lightning, fire, and smoke. Here the same God is presented as the King of all creation.

No king, president, or ruler is greater than Him.

Isaiah declared:

“The government shall be upon his shoulder.” (Isaiah 9:6)

When everything around us seems out of control, heaven is not in panic.

God is still King.

Application

When your world seems to be falling apart:

• Remember who sits on the throne.
• Trust God’s wisdom.
• Rest in His sovereign care.

2. The Lord Alone Is Worthy of Worship

Psalm 97:7–9

The psalm turns from the greatness of God to the foolishness of idols.

An idol is anything that takes God’s rightful place.

Today idols may not be carved from wood or stone.

People worship:

• Money
• Success
• Pleasure
• Technology
• Fame
• Self

Yet none of these can save.

Only Christ can forgive sins.

Only Christ conquered death.

Only Christ offers eternal life.

The writer reminds us that the Lord is exalted above every false god.

Application

Ask yourself:

Who or what has first place in my heart?

God deserves complete devotion.

3. Those Who Love God Must Hate Evil

Psalm 97:10–12

One of the strongest verses says:

“Ye that love the Lord, hate evil.”

Love for God and love for sin cannot live together.

The believer does not become perfect overnight, but there should be a growing desire to turn away from evil and walk in holiness.

Notice God’s promises:

• He preserves His saints.
• He delivers them.
• Light is sown for the righteous.
• Joy belongs to the upright.

Darkness may last for a season, but God’s light will break through.

The Christian’s future is bright because Christ has overcome the world.

Application

Instead of allowing the darkness around us to discourage us, we should shine as lights for Christ.

Christ in Psalm 97

Psalm 97 ultimately points us to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1 applies this psalm to Christ when it says,

“Let all the angels of God worship him.”

Jesus is the eternal King.

He came in humility at Bethlehem.

He died on Calvary.

He rose victorious from the grave.

One day every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Conclusion

Psalm 97 reminds us of three glorious truths:

• God reigns—therefore, do not fear.
• God alone deserves worship—therefore, reject every idol.
• God protects His people—therefore, walk in holiness and rejoice.

No matter what headlines we read or trials we face, our confidence rests in this unchanging truth:

“The Lord reigneth.”

The throne of heaven is occupied.

The King is still in control.

So let us rejoice, trust Him completely, hate evil, love righteousness, and proclaim His glory until He comes again.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You reign over all the earth. Help us to trust You when life is uncertain, to worship You alone, and to turn from all that dishonours You. Fill our hearts with the joy and peace that come from knowing our King sits upon the throne. May our lives reflect Your holiness and point others to the Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
