Psalm 114 Explained

When God Is Present, Everything Changes

Psalm 114 celebrates God delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and leading them towards the Promised Land. It reminds us that the presence and power of God can overcome every obstacle.

Verses 1–2: God Delivers His People

“When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language; Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.”

God rescued His people from Egypt, where they had suffered as slaves. He did not merely bring them out of bondage—He chose to dwell among them and rule over them.

This teaches us that salvation is more than being delivered from sin. Through the Holy Spirit, God makes His home within every believer. We are His people, and our lives belong to Him.

Verses 3–4: Creation Responds to God

“The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.”

The sea refers to the Red Sea, which divided so Israel could escape Pharaoh’s army. The River Jordan also stopped flowing when the Israelites entered the Promised Land.

The mountains “skipping” may describe Mount Sinai trembling when God revealed His presence. The psalmist uses beautiful poetic language to show that even nature must respond when Almighty God appears.

The Red Sea could not stop Israel from leaving Egypt, and the River Jordan could not prevent them from entering the Promised Land. God made a way both out of bondage and into blessing.

Verses 5–6: Why Did Nature Move?

The psalmist speaks directly to the sea, the river and the mountains:

“What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?”

Why did these mighty forces move? It was not because Israel was powerful. They moved because the Lord was present among His people.

Our strength is not found in our own abilities. The obstacles before us may appear impossible, but nothing can stand against the will and power of God.

Verse 7: Tremble Before the Lord

“Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob.”

The entire earth is commanded to tremble before its Creator. This is a call to recognise God’s holiness, authority and majesty.

The God who delivered Jacob’s descendants is still the Almighty God today. Nations, rulers, nature and every living person are accountable to Him.

Verse 8: God Provides in Impossible Places

“Which turned the rock into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.”

In the wilderness, God brought water out of a rock to satisfy His thirsty people. A hard rock appeared to contain no hope or provision, yet God turned it into a flowing fountain.

When our circumstances seem dry, hard and hopeless, God can provide from the most unexpected place. He can bring refreshment from a rock, create a road through the sea and open a path through every difficulty.

The Main Message

Psalm 114 teaches us that the presence of God changes everything. He delivers His people from bondage, removes obstacles from their path and provides for them in barren places.

The same God who opened the Red Sea, stopped the Jordan and brought water from the rock has not changed. When God leads us, no obstacle is greater than His power. We may not always see the way forward, but we can trust the One who makes a way where there appears to be no way.
