Psalm 113 Explained

From the Rising of the Sun, Praise the Lord

Psalm 113 is a joyful song of praise. It reminds us that God is exalted above everything, yet He lovingly reaches down to help the poor, the needy and the broken-hearted.

Verses 1–3: Praise the Lord at All Times

“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised.”

The psalm begins and ends with the words, “Praise ye the Lord.” God’s servants are encouraged to praise His name continually—from morning until evening and from one end of the earth to the other.

We should not praise God only when life is going well. He remains worthy of praise during our trials because His goodness and faithfulness never change.

Verses 4–6: God Is Exalted Above All

The Lord rules over every nation, and His glory is higher than the heavens. No earthly ruler, power or authority can compare with Him.

The question, “Who is like unto the Lord our God?” has only one answer: no one. God is without equal. Yet although He is seated on high, He humbles Himself to look upon the heavens and the earth. Nothing is too small or unimportant for His attention.

Verses 7–8: God Lifts Up the Poor

“He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill.”

God sees those whom society overlooks. He can lift a person from poverty, shame, rejection or despair and give them a place of honour.

This does not mean that every believer will become wealthy or powerful. It means that our circumstances do not determine our worth. God can restore dignity, provide hope and completely transform a life.

The greatest example is salvation: Christ finds sinners fallen in sin and raises them into the family of God.

Verse 9: God Brings Joy and Fruitfulness

“He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children.”

In biblical times, childlessness often brought deep sorrow and social shame. This verse shows that God sees private pain and is able to replace sorrow with joy.

We should not treat this as a promise that every childless woman will have children. Rather, it reveals God’s compassionate character. He cares about our deepest disappointments and can bring hope and fruitfulness into lives that appear empty.

The Main Message of Psalm 113

Psalm 113 presents a wonderful contrast: God is higher than the heavens, yet He bends down to help the lowly. He is both the exalted King and the compassionate Father.

Whatever your circumstances may be, you are not beneath God’s notice. The Lord who rules over the nations also sees the lonely, the poor, the needy and the broken-hearted.

Therefore, from sunrise until sunset, let every servant of God declare:

“Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and for evermore.”
