From Sunrise to Sunset, Praise the Lord

A Sermon on Psalm 113

Key verse:

“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised.”
—Psalm 113:3

Psalm 113 begins and ends with the same joyful command: “Praise ye the Lord.” It reminds us that the Lord is exalted above the heavens, yet He reaches down to lift the poor, comfort the sorrowful and give hope to the forgotten.

Praise God in Every Season

The psalmist declares that the Lord’s name should be praised from sunrise until sunset. In other words, we should praise Him throughout the whole day and in every season of life.

It is easy to praise God when our prayers are answered, our health is good and our lives are peaceful. But can we still praise Him when trouble comes, when the way becomes dark or when God appears silent?

Our circumstances may change, but God does not change. He is still faithful in the valley, still present in the storm and still worthy of praise when we cannot understand His plan.

Praise is not pretending that we have no problems. It is declaring that our God is greater than our problems.

There Is No One Like Our God

“Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high?”
—Psalm 113:5

The answer is simple: there is no one like Him.

Human rulers rise and fall. Governments change, riches disappear and earthly strength eventually fails. But the Lord remains upon His throne. His glory is above the heavens, and His authority extends over every nation.

The world may appear to be out of control, but God has never lost control. Nothing surprises Him, and nothing can overthrow His purposes.

Therefore, child of God, do not allow the news of this world to become greater in your thoughts than the truth of God’s Word. The Lord still reigns.

The God on High Looks Down with Compassion

Although God is exalted above all creation, He is not distant or uncaring.

“Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!”
—Psalm 113:6

What a wonderful truth! The God who rules the universe bends down to notice ordinary people. He hears the prayer whispered through tears. He sees the lonely person whom others have forgotten. He knows the burden that no one else understands.

You may feel unnoticed by people, but you are never unnoticed by God. You may believe that your need is too small to bring before Him, but nothing concerning His children is unimportant to their heavenly Father.

God Lifts People from the Dust

“He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill.”
—Psalm 113:7

The world often judges people by their wealth, position, education or appearance. God looks upon the heart. He sees value in those whom society rejects, and He is able to lift them from shame and despair.

Perhaps life has knocked you down. Perhaps others have spoken against you, rejected you or made you feel worthless. Remember that your present position does not determine your future when God places His hand upon your life.

Joseph was lifted from a prison to a palace. David was taken from watching sheep to ruling a nation. The disciples were ordinary fishermen, yet Jesus used them to carry the Gospel throughout the world.

Never despise humble beginnings. When God lifts someone up, no person can keep them down.

Salvation Is the Greatest Uplifting

The greatest fulfilment of this truth is found in Jesus Christ. Sin left us spiritually poor and helpless, but Christ came down from heaven to rescue us.

He died upon the cross, carried our sins and rose again so that all who trust in Him might receive forgiveness and eternal life. He lifts the repentant sinner from the dust and gives them a place in the family of God.

We bring Him our sin; He gives us His forgiveness.
We bring Him our brokenness; He gives us new life.
We come as strangers; He makes us His children.

What a Saviour!

God Can Replace Sorrow with Joy

Psalm 113 ends by speaking of the barren woman whom God makes a joyful mother. This reveals that God sees the deepest and most private sorrows of the human heart.

There may be an empty place in your life today. You may be carrying a disappointment that you cannot explain to anyone else. While God does not promise that every situation will be resolved exactly as we desire, He promises never to leave His children without hope.

He can bring purpose out of pain, fruitfulness out of emptiness and joy out of sorrow. The final chapter of your life has not yet been written. God is still working.

Conclusion: Praise Ye the Lord

Psalm 113 calls us to lift our eyes above our circumstances and look towards our wonderful God. He is high above the nations, yet close to the broken-hearted. He rules from heaven, yet reaches down into the dust. He is mighty enough to govern the universe and compassionate enough to hear your prayer.

Therefore, let us praise Him in the morning and in the evening. Let us praise Him on the mountain and in the valley. Let us praise Him when we understand and when we must simply trust.

From the rising of the sun until its going down, may our lives declare:

“Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and for evermore. Praise ye the Lord.”

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we praise You because there is no one like You. You are exalted above the heavens, yet You look upon us with love and compassion. Lift those who are discouraged, comfort those who are sorrowful and bring hope to those who feel forgotten. Help us to praise You in every season and to trust You when we cannot understand Your ways. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to save us and bring us into Your family. May Your name be praised through our lives, from sunrise until sunset. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
