The King and Priest Forever
An Explanation of Psalm 110
Psalm 110 is a prophetic psalm written by David. It speaks about Jesus Christ as the victorious King, the eternal Priest, and the Lord who will ultimately defeat every enemy. Jesus Himself quoted this psalm and explained that it referred to the Messiah.
“The LORD said unto my Lord” — Verse 1
David writes:
“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
David prophetically hears God the Father speaking to Jesus Christ. Although Jesus would come from David’s family line in His humanity, He was also David’s Lord because He is the eternal Son of God.
After Christ died for our sins and rose again, He ascended into Heaven and sat at the right hand of the Father. This is a place of honour, authority and victory. His enemies may still oppose Him today, but their defeat is certain.
Christ Will Rule in the Midst of His Enemies — Verses 2–3
The Lord promises that Christ’s authority will extend from Zion. Even while enemies surround Him, His kingdom will continue to advance.
Verse 3 describes people who willingly offer themselves to the King. Christ does not force people to love and serve Him. Those whose hearts have been changed by His grace gladly follow Him.
This reminds every Christian that we should not serve Jesus reluctantly. We should give Him our lives willingly, joyfully and completely.
“A Priest Forever” — Verse 4
“Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
This is one of the most important prophecies concerning Jesus. In Israel, kings normally came from the tribe of Judah, while priests came from the tribe of Levi. Jesus, however, holds both offices: He is our King and our great High Priest.
His priesthood is not temporary. He does not need to offer sacrifices repeatedly, because He offered Himself once upon the cross as the perfect sacrifice for sin. Having risen from the dead, He lives forever and intercedes for all who come to God through Him.
Melchizedek was both a king and a priest. In this way, he pointed forward to Christ, whose perfect and eternal priesthood is fully explained in Hebrews chapters 5–7.
The Victorious King — Verses 5–7
The closing verses show Christ defeating all opposition. Jesus first came into the world in humility, offering mercy and salvation. However, He will return as the righteous Judge and conquering King.
The world may reject Christ, mock His Word and resist His authority, but He will have the final victory. Every earthly ruler will one day answer to Him, and every knee will bow before Him.
Verse 7 pictures the King refreshing Himself beside the brook before lifting up His head in triumph. It expresses His strength, determination and certain victory.
The Message for Us Today
Psalm 110 teaches us that Jesus Christ is:
* The Lord seated at the Father’s right hand.
* The King whose kingdom cannot be defeated.
* The eternal High Priest who offered Himself for our sins.
* The Saviour who intercedes for His people.
* The righteous Judge who will return in victory.
Child of God, do not lose heart when evil appears to prosper. Jesus is still seated upon the throne, and His victory has already been promised. He is able to save completely everyone who comes to God through Him.
The great question is not whether Christ will reign, for His reign is certain. The question is: Have you willingly surrendered your life to the King and trusted in His finished work upon the cross?
