Happy Are the People Whose God Is the Lord

“The Joy of the LORD Is Your Strength”

“Happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” — Psalm 144:15 (KJV)

“For the joy of the LORD is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV)

There was a time when the people of Israel had wandered far from God. They had known His goodness, His protection, and His promises, yet through disobedience they had lost much of what God had given them.

Jerusalem had suffered. Its walls had been broken down, its gates had been burned, and many of its people had been carried away into captivity.

But God had not forgotten His people.

The Lord raised up a man named Nehemiah, whose heart was burdened for Jerusalem. When Nehemiah heard about the condition of the city, he wept, mourned, fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven.

“I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments.” — Nehemiah 1:5

God answered Nehemiah’s prayer and opened the way for him to return to Jerusalem.

The task before him was enormous. There was rubble everywhere, enemies opposed the work, and some mocked the people.

But Nehemiah encouraged them:

“The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build.” — Nehemiah 2:20

And they built.

Some worked while others stood guard. Their enemies tried to frighten them and stop God’s work, but the people continued because their confidence was in the Lord.

Eventually, the walls of Jerusalem were completed.

But God wanted to rebuild more than stone walls.

He wanted to rebuild the hearts of His people.

Ezra the priest brought out the Book of the Law of Moses and read God’s Word before the people. As they heard the Scriptures, they began to understand how far they had wandered from God.

They wept.

But Nehemiah told them that this was not a day to remain in sorrow. It was a day to rejoice because they were returning to the Lord.

Then came those wonderful words:

“Neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10

Their happiness was not because they had plenty of money.

It was not because life had suddenly become easy.

It was not because they had no enemies.

Their joy came because God was with them again, His Word was being honoured, and their hearts were being turned back to Him.

This reminds us of the words of David:

“Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” — Psalm 144:15

The world searches everywhere for happiness. Some seek it in money, possessions, entertainment, success, or popularity. These things may bring pleasure for a season, but they cannot give the lasting joy that comes from knowing God.

David also wrote:

“In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” — Psalm 16:11

The Christian may experience difficult days. There may be tears, disappointments, sickness, loneliness, or troubles. Yet beneath all these things there can remain a joy that the world cannot give and the world cannot take away.

Jesus said:

“Your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.” — John 16:22

That is the secret.

Our strength is not always found in having our circumstances changed. Sometimes God gives us strength while we are still walking through them.

When we are weak, He is strong.

When we are discouraged, His promises remain true.

When the road becomes dark, His Word remains a lamp unto our feet.

When our earthly happiness disappears, we can still say:

“The joy of the LORD is your strength.”

So Christian, do not build your happiness upon things that can disappear tomorrow.

Build your life upon the Lord.

Walk with Him.

Read His Word.

Trust His promises.

Praise Him in the sunshine and praise Him through the storm.

For the happiest person is not necessarily the one who possesses the most things.

The truly blessed person is the one who can say:

The Lord is my God.

For it is still true:

“Happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” — Psalm 144:15

And when the trials of life come, remember:

“The joy of the LORD is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10

The Message

Happiness is knowing the Lord.Joy is walking with the Lord.
Strength is trusting the Lord.

And blessed indeed are the people whose God is the LORD.
