Psalm 111 — Great Are the Works of the Lord
Psalm 111 is a beautiful song of praise celebrating God’s wonderful works, faithful character, and everlasting promises. The psalmist begins with a firm declaration:
“Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart.”
—Psalm 111:1
True worship is not half-hearted. The psalmist determines to praise God with all his heart, both privately among believers and publicly before the congregation.
God’s Works Are Great
“The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.”
—Psalm 111:2
God’s greatness can be seen throughout creation, in His dealings with His people, and in the salvation He provides. Those who love the Lord delight in studying His works because everything He does reveals His wisdom, power, and goodness.
We should never take God’s blessings for granted. The more we consider what He has done, the more reasons we discover to praise Him.
God Is Gracious and Compassionate
“The LORD is gracious and full of compassion.”
—Psalm 111:4
God is mighty, yet He is also merciful. He sees our weaknesses, understands our struggles, and cares about our needs. He provides food for those who fear Him and always remembers His covenant.
People may forget their promises, but God never forgets His Word. What He has promised, He is faithful to perform.
God’s Works Are True and Just
“The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.”
—Psalm 111:7
Everything God does is righteous. We may not always understand His ways, especially while passing through suffering, but God never makes a mistake. His commandments are trustworthy and stand firm for ever.
Human opinions change from generation to generation, but the Word of God remains true. We can build our lives upon it without fear of being disappointed.
God Has Provided Redemption
“He sent redemption unto his people.”
—Psalm 111:9
For Israel, this recalled God’s deliverance from bondage. For the Christian, it points us towards the greater redemption provided through Jesus Christ.
At the cross, Jesus paid the price for our sins. Salvation cannot be earned through religion or good works; it is received through repentance and faith in the finished work of Christ.
God’s name is holy and worthy of reverence. We should never treat Him lightly, for He is our Creator, Redeemer, and Lord.
The Beginning of Wisdom
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”
—Psalm 111:10
To fear the Lord does not mean living in terror of Him. It means reverencing Him, honouring His authority, obeying His Word, and recognising that we are accountable to Him.
A person may possess great knowledge and still lack true wisdom. Wisdom begins when we put God first and allow His Word to guide our choices. Those who obey Him gain spiritual understanding that the wisdom of this world cannot provide.
The Message of Psalm 111
Psalm 111 teaches us that:
- God deserves wholehearted praise.
- His works are great and wonderful.
- He is gracious, compassionate, and faithful.
- His Word and commandments stand for ever.
- He has provided redemption for His people.
- True wisdom begins with reverence for the Lord.
Whatever circumstances we may face, the character of God has not changed. His works remain wonderful, His promises remain certain, and His praise endures for ever.
“His praise endureth for ever.” —Psalm 111:10
