Psalm 82

Theme: God is the righteous Judge over all judges and rulers.

Psalm 82 is a powerful psalm that reminds us that although God gives authority to leaders, judges, and rulers, they are accountable to Him. It is a warning against injustice and a declaration that God alone is the supreme Judge.

Verses 1–2 – God Stands in Judgment

“God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.”

The word “gods” here does not mean that these rulers are divine. It refers to human judges and rulers who had been entrusted with authority (see also John 10:34–36 where Jesus quotes this psalm). They were expected to represent God’s justice on earth.

God asks:

“How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked?”

The problem was corruption. They favoured the rich, the powerful, and the wicked instead of judging fairly.

Verses 3–4 – God’s Command

God tells them what they should have been doing:

• Defend the poor.
• Care for the fatherless.
• Help the afflicted.
• Deliver the needy.
• Rescue those oppressed by wicked people.

True leadership is not about power—it is about serving others with justice and compassion.

Verse 5 – The Result of Corruption

“They know not, neither will they understand…”

Because these rulers ignored God’s ways, society itself became unstable.

When justice is abandoned:

• Truth suffers.
• Families suffer.
• Nations suffer.
• The moral foundations begin to crumble.

This echoes the message of Psalm 11:3:

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

Verses 6–7 – A Solemn Warning

“I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men…”

Although these rulers had been given great authority, they were still mortal. Their position did not place them above God’s judgment.

Power is temporary.
God’s judgment is eternal.

Verse 8 – The Final Prayer

The psalm ends with a prayer:

“Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.”

When human justice fails, God’s people look to Him. One day, God will judge every nation in perfect righteousness.

Lessons for Today

• Every leader is accountable to God.
• Justice matters to God.
• God has a special concern for the poor, the weak, and the oppressed.
• Corruption eventually brings ruin.
• Christ will one day judge the world in perfect righteousness.

Psalm 82 reminds us that earthly courts may fail, governments may fail, and leaders may disappoint us—but God never judges unfairly. His justice is perfect, His eyes see everything, and the day is coming when every wrong will be made right. It is therefore a call for believers to seek justice, show mercy, and trust the Lord, the righteous Judge, above all human authority.
