Psalm 82 – God the Righteous Judge

Title: “When God Judges the Judges”

Psalm 82 reminds us that while men may sit in positions of authority, there is One who sits above them all. Kings, judges, governments, employers, parents, church leaders, and every person who has been entrusted with responsibility will one day stand before God. Authority is a gift from God, but it carries accountability.

The psalm opens with a striking picture: God stands in the assembly and judges those who have been appointed to judge others. Earthly courts may make mistakes. Human leaders may become corrupt. But God never perverts’ justice. His judgments are always true, righteous, and perfect.

The Lord asks a searching question:

“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?”

That question still echoes through our world today.

We live in a generation where many call evil good and good evil. Justice is often influenced by money, power, popularity, or politics. The weak are ignored, and the innocent often suffer. Yet God sees everything. Nothing escapes His notice.

The Lord then reminds those in authority of their duty. They were not placed in positions of influence to enrich themselves or protect the powerful. They were called to defend the poor, care for the fatherless, help the afflicted, and deliver those who were being oppressed. God’s heart has always been for those who have no one to stand for them.

Throughout Scripture, we see this same concern. The prophets continually called rulers back to justice. The Lord Jesus welcomed the forgotten, the rejected, the poor, and the broken. He demonstrated that true greatness is found in serving others.

When leaders refuse to obey God, society begins to collapse. Psalm 82 says that all the foundations of the earth are shaken. When truth is rejected, families suffer. When righteousness is abandoned, nations become unstable. When justice disappears, fear replaces peace.

Yet this psalm is not only for judges or governments. Every Christian has influence over someone. Parents guide children. Grandparents leave a legacy. Teachers shape young minds. Employers influence workers. Pastors shepherd God’s people. Each of us should ask ourselves whether we reflect God’s justice, mercy, and truth.

Then comes the solemn warning:

“You shall die like men.”

No matter how powerful someone becomes, they cannot escape death. Wealth cannot stop it. Position cannot delay it. Fame cannot overcome it. Every person will one day stand before the Judge of all the earth.

That is why the closing prayer is so wonderful:

“Arise, O God, judge the earth: for You shall inherit all nations.”

This points us to the coming reign of the Lord Jesus Christ. One day He will return. Every wrong will be made right. Every hidden act will be revealed. Justice will no longer be delayed. Christ will reign in righteousness, and His kingdom will never end.

Until that day, God’s people are called to live differently. We must speak the truth with love, defend those who cannot defend themselves, show mercy without compromising righteousness, and remember that our own lives are lived before the eyes of a holy God.

The greatest comfort for the believer is this: when earthly justice fails, heaven’s justice never fails. God knows every tear, every injustice, every false accusation, and every act of faithfulness done in His name. He will reward the righteous and judge with absolute fairness.

May we live each day remembering that while the world may applaud human success, God looks for faithful hearts. Let us seek to honour Him in all we do, knowing that the Judge of all the earth will always do what is right.
