Thou Shall Not Swear Matthew5:34-37
Jesus Is Lord
Jesus is Lord, just as the Scriptures declare.
“His name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Prince of Peace: and the government shall be upon His shoulder… and of His kingdom there shall be no end.” — Book of Isaiah
Do we really understand who He is? And yet—how lightly His name is treated today.
Why say that? Because so often now, the only time some people use the name of the Lord is as a swear word.
I remember sitting with my wife in a busy restaurant in Dublin. It was crowded, and beside us sat a mother with four or five young children. The language coming from her was shocking—constant cursing, spoken so freely, as though it were normal. And perhaps to her, it was.
But is this what society has come to?
It may be considered more acceptable among adults, but before children. These young lives are listening, learning, and being shaped. And yet, if a priest or minister had walked in, would her words have changed? Likely so.
The commandment says we are not to misuse the name of the Lord. When we break one, we do not stand innocent—we stand guilty before them all.
Some may say, “There are worse things than swearing.” Perhaps that is true. But that does not make it right.
God did not give His commandments to burden us, but to guide us—to lift us higher, to set us apart, and to help us raise our children in the fear and nurture of the Lord.
And this is the heart of it:
The Lord Jesus loves the sinner—but He hates sin.
He paid a terrible price for our salvation, shedding His blood upon the cross at Calvary. He did not come to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
So let us honour His name.
Let us teach our children well.
Let us remember who He truly is.
GOD KNOWS.
GOD LOVES.
GOD CARES.
God Knows • God Loves • God Cares
