Who Shall Ascend? — A Poem from Psalm 24
The earth is the Lord’s, its fullness His own,
The breath in our lungs, the seeds that are sown,
The mountains that stand, the seas that roar—
All bow to the hand of the One we adore.
But who shall ascend to that holy height?
Who walks in His presence, clothed in His light?
Who stands unashamed where His glory burns?
Who enters the place where the heart God discerns?
Not hands that are stained with deeds done wrong,
Not lips that have whispered a lying song,
Not hearts divided, nor souls that stray—
For none of these find the narrow way.
But clean are the hands that in mercy move,
And pure is the heart that seeks His love,
No idols cherished, no hidden disguise—
But truth in the inward, before His eyes.
Yet who among us can truly say,
“My hands are clean, I’ve not gone astray”?
For all have wandered, all have failed,
And justice cries where sin has prevailed.
Then lift up your heads, you ancient gates!
Let glory enter, the King who waits!
Not man ascending by strength or might—
But God descending in power and light.
Who is this King, so strong, so true?
The Lord of hosts, who makes all new,
Mighty in battle, righteous in way,
The One who washes our sin away.
So bow your heart and seek His face,
For mercy flows in His holy place,
And those who call, though stained within,
Shall rise made clean from the depths of sin.
Who shall ascend?—the question remains,
But grace now answers where guilt once reigns,
For the King of glory has made a way—
That we might stand in His light one day.
