I Give Myself to Prayer

A Poem Inspired by Psalm 109

When lying tongues speak bitterly,
And cruel hearts make war with me,
Though hatred comes without a cause,
I’ll trust the Lord and keep His laws.

When love is answered with disdain,
And kindness brings me grief and pain,
I will not seek revenge somewhere—
Instead, I’ll give myself to prayer.

My heart is wounded deep within,
Yet I will not repay their sin;
The Lord has seen each falling tear,
And in my weakness, He is near.

The Judge of all knows what is right;
He sees the deeds concealed by night.
No secret word escapes His ear,
And every hidden truth is clear.

O Lord, defend me by Thy grace;
Let mercy shine upon my face.
When enemies accuse my soul,
Be Thou my strength and make me whole.

I place all judgment in Thy hand,
For only Thou can understand.
Protect the weak, expose the lie,
And hear the poor and needy cry.

Yet give me grace to pardon too,
Remembering what Christ went through.
He bore my sins upon the tree
And offered mercy full and free.

Though others curse, Lord, Thou shalt bless;
Exchange my sorrow for gladness.
Though they condemn and cause me pain,
My faith in Thee shall still remain.

For at the poor man’s right hand,
The Lord of mercy takes His stand.
He saves the soul whom men condemn
And brings His child to peace again.

So I will praise Him joyfully
Before the watching multitude;
When hatred rises everywhere,
I’ll give myself to earnest prayer.

“For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.”
