The King Above All Kings
A Sermon on Psalm 47
Church, Psalm 47 is not a quiet psalm.
It is not a whisper in the dark.
It is a shout of victory, a song of praise, and a declaration that God still reigns upon the throne.
The psalmist begins by saying:
“O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.”
This is not dead religion.
This is living faith.
This is a people who know who their God is.
There are many voices in the world today trying to rule the hearts of men.
Fear tries to rule.
Money tries to rule.
Governments try to rule.
Sin tries to rule.
But Psalm 47 reminds us that above every throne, above every kingdom, above every power, there is still one King — Almighty God.
The world changes constantly.
Leaders rise and fall.
Economies shake.
Nations struggle.
But God never loses control.
He has never had an emergency meeting in Heaven.
He has never been surprised by the troubles of mankind.
The Lord reigns!
The psalm says:
“For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.”
That word “terrible” means awesome, mighty, worthy of reverence and fear.
God is not weak.
He is not powerless.
He is not defeated.
He is the Creator of Heaven and earth, and every knee will one day bow before Him.
Sometimes people act as though God has been pushed out of society.
But no government can vote God out.
No generation can silence His truth.
No darkness can overcome His light.
Psalm 47 tells us to sing praises unto God:
“Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King.”
Why?
Because praise lifts our eyes above the storm.
Praise reminds us who is really in control.
When we praise God, fear begins to lose its grip.
Worry begins to weaken.
Faith begins to rise.
The enemy wants the church silent.
But God calls His people to worship.
Not only when life is easy — but even in difficulty.
Anyone can praise God on the mountain, but true faith praises Him in the valley too.
And then comes a beautiful picture:
“God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.”
What a triumphant image!
God is exalted.
God is victorious.
God is still on the throne.
For the Christian, this points us toward Jesus Christ — risen, ascended, and glorified.
The grave could not hold Him.
Death could not defeat Him.
And because He lives, there is hope for every soul that trusts in Him.
Friend, maybe today your life feels uncertain.
Maybe your heart is troubled.
Maybe the future seems unclear.
Psalm 47 reminds us that our security is not in man, not in wealth, not in politics, but in the King of kings.
One day every kingdom of this world will pass away.
But the kingdom of God shall stand forever.
So clap your hands.
Lift your voice.
Do not let despair steal your song.
For the Lord reigns.
The King is still upon the throne.
And His mercy endureth forever.
Amen.
God is a good God.
God knows, God loves, God cares.
