Psalm 56 is a psalm of trust written by David during a frightening time when he was captured by the Philistines in Gath. It is a prayer from a man surrounded by fear, enemies, and uncertainty—yet it becomes a powerful declaration of faith in God.
Psalm 56 Explained
“What Time I Am Afraid, I Will Trust in Thee”
1. David’s Fear and Trouble (verses 1–2)
David begins by crying out for mercy:
“Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up.”
He feels hunted, oppressed, and constantly attacked by enemies.

David is honest about his fear. The Bible does not hide human weakness. Even great men of faith experience anxiety and pressure.
2. Trust in the Midst of Fear (verses 3–4)

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

“What can flesh do unto me?”

4. God Sees Every Tear (verse 8)

“Put thou my tears into thy bottle.”
David believes God notices every sorrow and remembers every tear.

No pain is hidden from God. Every cry, every heartbreak, and every lonely night matters to Him.
5. Confidence in God’s Deliverance (verses 9–13)
The psalm changes from fear to confidence.
David declares:
“This I know; for God is for me.”
