Psalm 81 is a powerful psalm that combines celebration, remembrance, warning, and invitation. It was written by Asaph and was likely sung during one of Israel’s religious festivals.
Structure of Psalm 81
1. A Call to Worship (Verses 1–5)
The psalm begins with joyful praise:
“Sing aloud unto God our strength…”
Israel is called to celebrate with music, singing, and instruments. The festival mentioned may have been the Feast of Trumpets or another sacred gathering established by God after the Exodus from Egypt.
Main idea: God’s people should joyfully worship Him because He is their strength and deliverer.
2. God Reminds Israel of His Deliverance (Verses 6–10)
God begins speaking directly:
- He removed Israel’s burdens in Egypt.
- He answered them in times of trouble.
- He tested them at the waters of Meribah.
- He gave them the commandment:
“There shall no strange god be in thee…”
God reminds them that He alone rescued them and deserves their complete loyalty.
Main idea: Remember what God has done, and worship Him alone.
3. God’s Grief Over Israel’s Disobedience (Verses 11–12)
A sad shift occurs:
“But my people would not hearken to my voice…”
Despite God’s blessings, Israel repeatedly ignored Him and pursued their own desires.
As a consequence:
“So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust…”
This is one of the Bible’s sobering judgments: God allows people to follow the path they insist on taking.
Main idea: Persistent rejection of God leads to spiritual consequences.
4. God’s Desire to Bless His People (Verses 13–16)
The psalm ends with God’s heartfelt longing:
“Oh that my people had hearkened unto me…”
God expresses what He would have done if they had obeyed:
- Defeated their enemies.
- Protected them.
- Prospered them.
- Fed them with “the finest of wheat.”
- Satisfied them with “honey out of the rock.”
These images symbolise abundant blessing and provision.
Main idea: God delights in blessing those who trust and obey Him.

The psalm ends not with condemnation but with an invitation. God’s message is essentially: “Listen to Me, and I will bless you.” It reveals both God’s holiness and His deep desire for a close, obedient relationship with His people.
