Psalm 91 is one of the Bible’s most comforting psalms. Its central message is that God is a refuge and protector for those who trust Him. It encourages believers to live in close relationship with God and rely on Him during danger, fear, and uncertainty.

Verses 1–2: God Is Our Safe Place
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
- “Dwells” means to live continually in God’s presence, not just visit Him occasionally.
- God’s “shadow” symbolises His constant care and protection.
- The psalmist declares that God is his refuge, fortress, and trusted protector.
Lesson: Security comes from trusting God, not merely from circumstances.
Verses 3–8: God’s Protection
These verses mention dangers such as:
- Traps (“the fowler’s snare”)
- Deadly diseases
- Terror at night
- Arrows by day
- Plagues and destruction
The imagery teaches that God watches over His people in every kind of danger—whether visible or unseen.
Does this mean believers never suffer?
Not necessarily. The Bible shows that faithful people still experience hardship. The psalm emphasizes God’s ultimate protection, presence, and faithfulness, even through suffering.
Verses 9–13: God Sends His Angels
“He will command His angels concerning you…”
God promises angelic protection over those who trust Him.
This passage is significant because it was quoted by Satan when he tempted Jesus, urging Him to jump from the temple. Jesus responded that Scripture should not be used to test God. This teaches that God’s promises are not meant to encourage reckless behavior.
Verses 14–16: God’s Personal Promise
In these final verses, God Himself speaks:
- “I will rescue him.”
- “I will protect him.”
- “I will answer him.”
- “I will be with him in trouble.”
- “I will deliver him and honor him.”
- “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Notice that God doesn’t promise a life without trouble. Instead, He promises His presence in trouble, along with deliverance according to His will.
