A psalmist is a person who writes, sings, or composes psalms—sacred songs or poems of praise, prayer, worship, lament, thanksgiving, or wisdom that are offered to God.

In the Bible, the Book of Psalms contains 150 psalms written by several authors over many years. The best-known psalmist is David, who wrote many of the psalms, though others also contributed, including:

  • Asaph
  • The Sons of Korah
  • Moses
  • Solomon
  • Heman the Ezrahite
  • Ethan the Ezrahite

The psalmists expressed every kind of human emotion before God. Their writings include:

  • Praise for God’s greatness.
  • Worship and adoration.
  • Confession of sin and repentance.
  • Cries for help in times of trouble.
  • Thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness.
  • Trust and hope in God’s promises.

One reason the Psalms remain so loved is that they show us we can come honestly before God with both our joys and our sorrows. The psalmists teach us that prayer is not about pretending everything is fine, but about bringing our whole heart to the Lord in faith.

In a broad sense, a psalmist today is someone who writes or sings songs that glorify God and point others to Him, although the biblical Book of Psalms itself is unique and inspired Scripture.
