Psalm 94 – An Explanation

Psalm 94 is a psalm that encourages God’s people when they see wickedness, injustice, and oppression. It reminds us that although evil may appear to prosper for a time, God sees everything and will judge righteously. The psalm is a call to trust the Lord rather than despair when justice seems delayed.

Verses 1–3 – A Cry for Justice

“O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth…”

The psalmist begins by asking God to act against those who do evil. He is not seeking personal revenge but appealing to God’s perfect justice. The wicked seem to flourish, and God’s people wonder how long this will continue.

This teaches us that believers should leave vengeance in God’s hands rather than taking revenge themselves.

Verses 4–7 – The Pride of the Wicked

The wicked boast about their actions. They oppress the poor, widows, strangers, and orphans—the very people God commands His people to protect.

Worst of all, they think:

“The Lord shall not see.”

How mistaken they are. Many today also live as though God neither sees nor cares, but Scripture teaches that nothing is hidden from Him.

Verses 8–11 – God Knows Everything

The psalmist reminds the foolish:

• God created the ear—can He not hear?
• God formed the eye—can He not see?
• God disciplines nations—will He not judge?

Nothing escapes God’s notice. Even our thoughts are known to Him. This should both humble us and comfort us.

Verses 12–15 – The Blessing of God’s Discipline

“Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord.”

God sometimes corrects His own children, not to destroy them but to teach them. His discipline produces wisdom, patience, and holiness.

The Lord never abandons His people. Justice may seem delayed, but righteousness will ultimately prevail.

Verses 16–19 – The Lord Is Our Helper

The psalmist asks:

“Who will rise up for me against the evildoers?”

His answer is clear—the Lord Himself.

He admits that without God’s help he would have fallen, but God’s mercy sustained him. Even when anxious thoughts filled his mind, God’s comfort brought peace.

This is one of the most encouraging truths in the psalm: God’s comfort is greater than our fears.

Verses 20–23 – God Will Judge Evil

The psalm ends with confidence.

Corrupt rulers may use laws to promote injustice, but they cannot escape God’s judgment. Those who plot against the innocent will eventually face the very justice they ignored.

The closing words are triumphant:

“The Lord our God shall cut them off.”

God has the final word.

• God sees every act of injustice.
• Evil may prosper temporarily, but never permanently.
• God’s discipline is an expression of His love.
• When we are overwhelmed with worry, God’s comfort gives peace.
• We should trust God’s justice rather than seek personal revenge.
• The Lord is the refuge and defence of His people.

This verse reminds us that when our minds are full of fear, anxiety, or confusion, the Lord is able to comfort and strengthen us.

In summary: Psalm 94 is a psalm of hope in difficult times. It assures believers that God sees every injustice, supports those who trust Him, disciplines His children in love, and will one day judge all evil with perfect righteousness. Though the wicked may seem to triumph for a season, the Lord remains the righteous Judge and the secure refuge of His people.
