Psalm 95 is a call to worship God and a warning against hardening one’s heart. It is often divided into two parts:

1. A Call to Worship (Verses 1–7a)

The psalm begins with joyful praise:

“Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord.”

The writer encourages God’s people to:

• Sing and shout with gratitude.
• Worship because God is the great King above all gods.
• Recognize that God created the earth, mountains, sea, and land.
• Bow down in humility because He is our Creator and Shepherd.

The central message here is:
God deserves worship because He is both our Creator and our caring Shepherd.

2. A Warning Against Unbelief (Verses 7b–11)

The tone changes dramatically:

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…”

This refers to Israel’s rebellion in the wilderness after leaving Egypt, especially at places called Meribah and Massah (see Exodus 17).

Although the Israelites saw God’s miracles, they:

• Complained and doubted Him.
• Tested His patience.
• Refused to trust and obey Him.

Because of their unbelief, God declared that that generation would not enter the Promised Land.

The warning is:
Don’t repeat Israel’s mistake. When God speaks, respond with faith and obedience rather than stubbornness and unbelief.

In the New Testament, Hebrews chapters 3–4 quote Psalm 95 extensively. The author uses it to teach that believers should:

• Enter God’s “rest” through faith in Christ.
