Here’s an original poem inspired by Psalm 88 for GeorgesWebMinistries.com.
Psalm 88 – A Prayer in the Dark
The night is long, the road is steep,
My weary soul can scarcely keep.
The tears I shed, the sighs I bear,
Rise heavenward in silent prayer.
“O Lord, my God,” my spirit cries,
Though darkness fills these earthly skies.
I seek Your face both night and day,
Though answers seem so far away.
My strength is gone, my heart grows weak,
Yet still it’s You alone I seek.
Though friends have left and hopes have fled,
Your name remains my daily bread.
The shadows whisper, “All is lost,”
And every step reveals the cost.
Yet faith still kneels though eyes grow dim,
For every prayer belongs to Him.
The pit seems deep, the burden sore,
The waves keep beating to the shore.
But though I cannot see Your hand,
I trust the wisdom You have planned.
No cheerful ending fills this song,
No sudden joy to make me strong.
It ends where many pilgrims stand—
Still reaching for the Master’s hand.
For sometimes faith is simply this:
To seek the Lord through emptiness;
To lift a heart that’s torn apart,
And place it in the Father’s heart.
The darkest night cannot remain;
The dawn will break beyond the pain.
The God who hears the faintest cry
Still watches every tear-filled eye.
So if today your soul feels worn,
And hope seems buried, bruised, and torn,
Remember this before you part:
God holds your tears close to His heart.
Though Psalm Eighty-Eight is clothed in night,
The Lord Himself remains the Light.
And those who trust His faithful hand
Will one day fully understand.
This poem would also make a beautiful companion image showing the psalmist kneeling alone beneath a storm-filled sky, a single tear running down his face, a small oil lamp beside him, the title “Psalm 88 – A Prayer in the Dark” in gold lettering across the top, and GeorgesWebMinistries.com in gold across the bottom.
