When Darkness Will Not Lift
A Sermon on Psalm 88
Text: “O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee.” — Psalm 88:1
Psalm 88 is perhaps the saddest chapter in the Book of Psalms. It is the cry of a believer whose heart is broken, whose body is weary, and whose soul feels surrounded by darkness. Unlike many other psalms, there is no joyful ending, no sudden victory, and no visible answer. The final words are among the most solemn in Scripture: “Darkness is my closest friend.”
Yet God placed this psalm in the Bible for a reason.
There are times when God’s people walk through valleys so deep that words fail them. There are seasons when prayers seem to rise no higher than the ceiling, when tears become our daily companions, and when even faithful Christians wonder why heaven seems silent.
The first thing we notice is that the psalmist does not stop praying.
He begins, “O LORD God of my salvation.” Before he speaks of his pain, he remembers who God is. His feelings tell him he is alone, but his faith still calls upon the God who saves. There is a lesson for every believer. Faith is not measured by how loudly we sing in sunshine but by whether we continue to call upon God in the storm.
The psalmist pours out his heart without pretending everything is well. He tells God about his fears, his loneliness, and his grief. He speaks honestly. The Lord never asked His children to wear a mask of happiness. He invites us to come just as we are. We may hide our tears from others, but we should never hide them from God.
Many people imagine that great believers never struggle with despair. Psalm 88 tells us otherwise. Even those who love the Lord can experience deep sorrow. Spiritual maturity does not make us immune from suffering. Sometimes the strongest faith is found in the weakest cry.
The writer feels forgotten by friends. He says those close to him have been taken away. Many people know that feeling. Illness, bereavement, disappointment, rejection, and loneliness can isolate us from those around us. But while friends may leave, God never abandons His children, even when His presence cannot be felt.
One of the remarkable truths about Psalm 88 is that God preserved this prayer forever. That means the Lord wanted generations of believers to know that He hears broken hearts. If God had rejected this prayer, it would never have become part of His inspired Word. Instead, He placed it in the Bible so that suffering saints would know they are not alone.
This psalm also points us to the Lord Jesus Christ. On the cross He entered the deepest darkness imaginable. He was rejected by men, acquainted with grief, and cried, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Because Christ entered that darkness for us, those who trust Him will never be truly abandoned by God. Our feelings may change, but His promise never does.
Sometimes God changes our circumstances quickly. Sometimes He changes us while we wait. At other times He simply gives us grace to endure another day. The Christian life is not built upon emotions but upon the unchanging character of God.
Perhaps today you feel like the writer of Psalm 88. Your prayers seem unanswered. Your burdens seem too heavy. Your heart feels weary.
Do not stop praying.
Do not stop trusting.
Do not stop looking to Christ.
The God who heard Heman still hears every whispered prayer today. Every tear is known to Him. Every sleepless night is counted. Every sigh reaches His throne.
The darkness may remain for a season, but darkness never has the final word. The resurrection of Jesus Christ reminds us that the longest night is followed by God’s morning.
So keep your eyes upon the Saviour.
Hold tightly to His promises.
Wait patiently for His perfect time.
The God of your salvation has not forgotten your name.
