“Fret Not Thyself”
A Sermon on Psalm 37
Brothers and sisters,
we are living in a world where evil often seems to prosper.
Good people struggle while wicked people appear to flourish.
The dishonest grow rich, the proud exalt themselves, and the faithful sometimes wonder:
“Lord, why does this continue?”
This is exactly the cry behind Psalm 37.
King David had seen battles, betrayal, persecution, and injustice. Yet through all his trials he learned one great truth:
God is still on the throne.
David begins the Psalm by saying:
“Fret not thyself because of evildoers.”
In other words:
Do not let evil steal your peace.
The enemy wants believers to become:
- bitter,
- angry,
- jealous,
- discouraged,
- and spiritually exhausted.
But David says:
“Do not fret.”
Why?
Because wickedness has an expiry date.
The wicked may rise quickly like green grass after rain, but grass soon withers under the heat of the sun. What seems powerful today can disappear tomorrow.
But the child of God is rooted deeper than temporary success.
The world says:
“Fight your own battles.”
But Psalm 37 says:
“Trust in the Lord, and do good.”
Faith is not sitting doing nothing.
Faith is continuing to walk uprightly while trusting God with the outcome.
Some people only trust God when life is easy.
But real faith trusts Him when prayers seem delayed.
David says:
“Commit thy way unto the Lord.”
That means:
Roll your burdens onto God.
Your fears.
Your future.
Your pain.
Your unanswered questions.
Place them into the hands of the Almighty.
Some of you have carried burdens too long.
You have worried over things that God told you to surrender.
But tonight the Lord is saying:
“Trust Me with it.”
Psalm 37 also says:
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him.”
That is difficult for human nature.
We want immediate answers.
Immediate justice.
Immediate breakthrough.
But God works in seasons.
Sometimes heaven seems silent, but silence does not mean abandonment.
While you are waiting, God is working behind the scenes.
The Lord sees every tear.
He sees every hidden struggle.
He sees every injustice done against His people.
And at the appointed time,
God will move.
Then David declares:
“The meek shall inherit the earth.”
The world admires pride, power, and self-promotion.
But God honours humility.
The meek are those who stay soft before God in a hard world.
People may mistake meekness for weakness,
but true meekness is strength under God’s control.
Even Jesus Christ quoted this verse because heaven values humility far more than pride.
David then speaks from experience:
“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken.”
What a testimony.
David had slept in caves.
He had enemies hunting him.
He faced giants, betrayal, and sorrow.
Yet through it all God remained faithful.
And child of God,
He will remain faithful to you also.
You may feel overlooked,
but you are not forgotten.
You may feel weary,
but God still holds you.
You may feel surrounded,
but heaven is still fighting for you.
Psalm 37 is not merely a chapter about surviving life —
it is about learning to live with confidence in God while the storm rages around you.
So tonight:
- Do not envy the wicked.
- Do not lose your peace.
- Do not give up in discouragement.
Trust in the Lord.
Delight yourself in Him.
Commit your way unto Him.
Rest in Him.
Wait upon Him.
Because the righteous are never abandoned by God.
Amen.
