Sermon- on Psalm 49
Sermon on Psalm 49
“Rich Toward God”
Psalm 49 is a warning to a world that believes money, fame, power, and possessions can give lasting security. Yet the Psalmist reminds us that every person—rich or poor, famous or forgotten—must one day face death. Wealth may buy comfort for a season, but it cannot purchase eternal life.
The world teaches people to build bigger barns, gain more followers, climb higher, and trust in riches. Yet Psalm 49 asks a solemn question: What shall a man give in exchange for his soul? When the final breath comes, no bank account can stop death. No title can hold back the grave. No earthly treasure can redeem a soul before God.
Many spend their lives chasing things they cannot keep while neglecting the eternal things they cannot afford to lose. Houses decay. Money fades. Fame is forgotten. Even the strongest body grows weak with time. The Psalmist says that man in honour, without understanding, is like the beasts that perish. In other words, a life lived only for earthly gain misses the greater purpose for which we were created.
Yet in the middle of this Psalm shines a glorious light of hope:
“But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave.”
There is something money could never buy, but God freely gives through His mercy—redemption. What riches could never accomplish, the grace of God has done. Through faith in the Lord, there is forgiveness, eternal life, peace with God, and hope beyond the grave.
The believer does not need to fear when the wealthy prosper or when the proud boast in their abundance. Their riches stay behind when they leave this world. But the child of God carries something greater than gold—a relationship with the living God.
Psalm 49 calls us to examine where our trust truly lies. Is our confidence in money, possessions, governments, careers, or people? Or is our trust in the Lord? For one day every earthly foundation will shake, but those who stand upon God’s truth shall remain secure forever.
The greatest investment a person can ever make is not in silver or gold, but in their soul. A person may gain the whole world and still lose everything that matters. But the one who walks with God possesses riches this world can never take away.
So let us live wisely. Let us use what God gives us humbly and faithfully, remembering that life is short and eternity is long. Let us seek treasures in heaven rather than only treasures on earth. And let us rejoice that through God there is victory over the grave.
For wealth fades, but God remains.
Riches perish, but His Word stands forever.
Death comes to all, but eternal life belongs to those who trust in Him.
Amen.
God is a good God.
God knows, God loves, God cares.
