A Sermon on Psalm 55
“When the Heart Is Heavy”
My dear friends, there are times in life when the burden becomes so heavy that the soul feels ready to collapse. There are wounds that no medicine can heal, pains that no words can fully describe, and sorrows that strike deeper than any outward trouble. Psalm 55 is one of those cries from a broken heart.
David was not speaking as a mighty king sitting comfortably upon a throne. He was speaking as a man hurt, betrayed, fearful, and overwhelmed. He cried unto God because the storm around him had become too great for him to bear alone.
David says:
“My heart is sore pained within me.”
How many today understand those words?
There are people smiling outwardly while inwardly they are battling fear, disappointment, loneliness, and sorrow. Some are carrying burdens no one else sees. Some have been wounded by life itself. Others have been hurt by those they trusted most.
The deepest pain in Psalm 55 was not merely the enemy outside the gate—it was the betrayal of a friend. David said:
“It was not an enemy that reproached me… but it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.”
There is something especially painful about betrayal. Harsh words from strangers may wound us, but betrayal from someone close cuts far deeper. A trusted friend, a loved one, or someone once close to our heart can leave scars that linger for years.
Yet Psalm 55 reminds us of something powerful: God sees every tear and hears every cry.
When David felt overwhelmed, he said:
“Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.”
Sometimes we too want to run away from problems. We want to escape the pressure, the heartache, and the confusion. But the answer is not found in running away from God—it is found in running toward Him.
Then comes one of the greatest verses in the Psalm:
“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee.”
Notice the promise carefully. God does not say there will be no burden. He says He will sustain you beneath it. The Lord becomes strength for the weary, peace for the troubled, and comfort for the brokenhearted.
There are burdens too heavy for human shoulders, but never too heavy for God.
There are storms too strong for us, but never too strong for Him.
There are nights that seem endless, but God still watches over His people in the darkness.
Psalm 55 teaches us that faith is not pretending everything is fine. Faith is crying out to God in the middle of the pain and still trusting Him to carry us through.
Perhaps today someone feels wounded by betrayal. Someone feels anxious about tomorrow. Someone feels tired in spirit and weary in heart. The message of this Psalm is simple:
Do not carry your burden alone.
Take it to the Lord.
Leave it at His feet.
For the God who heard David still hears His people today.
And though the storm may rage for a season, the Lord remains our refuge, our shelter, and our peace.
May the Lord strengthen every weary heart. Amen.
