Psalm 64 – When Words Become Weapons
Text: Psalm 64
David was no stranger to trouble. He faced enemies on the battlefield, but some of his deepest wounds came not from swords, but from words. Psalm 64 is the cry of a man who feels surrounded by secret plots, false accusations, and hidden attacks. Yet it is also the testimony of a man who knows that God is greater than every scheme of man.
David begins by asking God to hear him. He does not hide his fears or pretend everything is fine. He brings his concerns honestly before the Lord. There is a lesson for us here. God never asks His children to carry their burdens alone. He invites us to cast every care upon Him because He cares for us.
The enemies David describes are people whose words have become weapons. Their tongues are like swords and their speech like arrows. How true this remains today. A careless word can wound a heart. A false accusation can damage a reputation. Gossip can spread like wildfire. The tongue is small, yet it has the power to build up or tear down.
The wicked in this psalm believe they can hide their plans. They whisper in secret places and imagine that no one sees. Yet they forget one important truth: God sees everything. Nothing is hidden from His eyes. Every conversation, every motive, every secret plan is known to Him.
Then comes the turning point of the psalm. The enemies shoot their arrows, but God has an arrow of His own. In a moment, He intervenes. The very people who thought they were untouchable discover that they must answer to the Judge of all the earth. God’s justice may seem delayed, but it is never absent.
This truth should encourage every believer. When we are misunderstood, attacked, or falsely accused, our first response should not be revenge. We do not need to fight every battle ourselves. We can place the matter into God’s hands. The Lord knows how to defend His children far better than we do.
The psalm ends with rejoicing. The righteous are glad in the Lord because they see His hand at work. Their confidence is not in their own strength but in God’s faithfulness. The same God who heard David’s prayer still hears the prayers of His people today.
Perhaps you are carrying the pain of harsh words. Perhaps someone has spoken against you, criticized you unfairly, or spread things that are untrue. Psalm 64 reminds us that God hears, God sees, and God acts. The Lord is not blind to your struggles. He knows your heart, and He is able to bring light where others seek to create darkness.
So let us guard our tongues, trust God’s justice, and rest in His care. The arrows of men may fly, but God’s protection is greater. The whispers of the wicked may rise, but God’s truth stands forever. And when all is said and done, the righteous will rejoice because the Lord remains faithful.
“Let the righteous be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him.” — Psalm 64:10
Amen.
