Sermon on
Psalm 53
“When Man Forgets God”
My friends, Psalm 53 is a warning to the world and a wake-up call to the heart. It is not merely speaking about people who say with their lips, “There is no God,” but about those who live as though God does not exist. A person can go to church every week and still live without truly seeking the Lord.
The Psalm begins with these solemn words:
“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.”
Notice, it says in his heart. The problem is not merely intellectual—it is spiritual. The fool is not always the man without education. Sometimes the greatest fool is the one who knows right from wrong yet refuses to walk in the truth.
We are living in a generation where many have pushed God out of society. People want blessing without obedience, peace without repentance, and heaven without holiness. But when man removes God from his life, corruption follows. Morality begins to crumble. Truth becomes twisted. Right becomes wrong, and wrong becomes celebrated.
Psalm 53 tells us that God looked down from heaven to see if there were any who sought Him. What a picture! The Almighty searching the earth for hearts that hunger after Him. Yet the Psalm says mankind had turned aside. Humanity had wandered from the path of righteousness.
And if we are honest, every one of us has failed at times. None of us can stand before God in our own goodness. That is why we need mercy. That is why we need a Saviour.
The Psalm also speaks of those who “devour” God’s people. There have always been people who oppress, mock, and abuse others while believing they will never answer for it. But Psalm 53 reminds us that God sees everything. Heaven is not blind to injustice. The Lord will deal with wickedness in His time and in His way.
Then comes the cry of hope:
“Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!”
Even in a dark Psalm, there is light breaking through. The writer longs for deliverance. He longs for God to restore His people. And thank God, salvation did come. Christians see this fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the One who came to save sinners and bring us back to God.
The message of Psalm 53 is clear:
Without God, man falls.
Without truth, society crumbles.
Without repentance, the heart grows cold.
But with God, there is forgiveness.
With God, there is hope.
With God, there is restoration.
So today, let us not harden our hearts. Let us seek the Lord while He may be found. Let us walk humbly before Him and remember that true wisdom begins with fearing God.
For the world may forget God,
but God has not forgotten the world.
Amen.
God is a good God.
God knows, God loves, God cares.
