Avoiding the Mud Pile

There are issues in our society that can stir deep anger—such as the failures surrounding child sexual exploitation and grooming gang cases, or when people feel they are unfairly labelled or dismissed for expressing their opinions. In such moments, it is easy to be drawn into arguments that generate more heat than light.

As Christians, however, we are called to a higher standard. Our words should be truthful, gracious, and wise. The Lord Jesus said:

“Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16)

Wisdom knows when to speak, how to speak, and what spirit to speak with. Harmlessness does not mean remaining silent in the face of wrongdoing; it means speaking the truth without hatred, malice, or a desire to wound others.

The mud pile of anger, insults, and endless arguments only leaves everyone dirtier. Truth does not need bitterness to make it powerful. We can stand for justice, defend the vulnerable, and speak honestly, while still showing the character of Christ.

May our words always be seasoned with grace, guided by wisdom, and spoken in love. In a world that often shouts, let us be known as those who speak the truth with courage and compassion.
