Sermon on Psalm 45

“The King Upon the Throne”

Psalm 45 is a psalm filled with majesty, worship, and heavenly beauty. It lifts our eyes away from the troubles of this world and points us toward the eternal King whose throne shall never fall. Though it may have first been written for an earthly king’s wedding, its deeper meaning points us to Jesus Christ — the King of kings and Lord of lords.

The psalm begins with a heart overflowing. The writer says his heart is “inditing a good matter.” In other words, he cannot contain the joy and wonder within him. When someone truly sees the greatness of God, praise begins to rise naturally from the soul. Worship is not forced; it flows from a heart touched by the King.

The King in Psalm 45 is no ordinary ruler. He speaks with grace. He rules with righteousness. He fights for truth and justice. Earthly kingdoms rise and fall, governments change, and leaders disappoint, but the throne of Christ is forever. His kingdom is not built upon corruption, pride, or selfish ambition. His sceptre is a sceptre of righteousness.

The world today longs for leadership that is honest, compassionate, and just. Many place their hope in politicians, wealth, or human systems, only to be left discouraged. But Psalm 45 reminds us there is still a King on the throne. God has not abandoned this world. Jesus Christ still reigns in power and glory.

The psalm says:

“Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.”

What a comfort that is for the believer. Empires crumble, economies shake, and nations struggle, but Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. No darkness can overthrow His kingdom. No enemy can remove Him from His throne.

Then the psalm turns to the bride. She is clothed in beauty and brought before the King with joy. Spiritually, this speaks of God’s people. The Lord calls His people to draw near to Him, to leave behind the old life, and to walk in faithfulness and love. The King desires a heart surrendered to Him.

Many people seek beauty outwardly, but God first looks upon the heart. The true beauty of the bride is not riches or appearance, but devotion, humility, holiness, and love for the King.

Psalm 45 is also a reminder that worship belongs to Christ alone. He is worthy of honour because He laid down His life for sinners. The King of glory wore a crown of thorns so that we could receive eternal life. The One seated upon the throne first went to the cross.

And because He rose again, there is hope for every broken heart, every weary soul, and every wandering sinner. The King still calls people to come unto Him.

Today the invitation still stands:
Come to the King.
Trust the King.
Walk with the King.
For His kingdom shall never end.

And one day, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

May we not live only for the fading kingdoms of this world, but for the everlasting kingdom of God. Amen.
