Sermon Psalm chapter 46

God Is Our Refuge

A Sermon on

Book of Psalms

Psalm 46

Church, we are living in a world filled with uncertainty. Nations are troubled, families are under pressure, minds are weary, and hearts are often filled with fear. One day everything seems calm, and the next day life can change in a moment. But in the middle of all the shaking, Psalm 46 gives us a message of hope:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Notice the Psalm does not say we might face trouble — it says God is present in trouble. The believer is not promised a storm-free life, but we are promised the presence of God in every storm.

The writer paints a picture of mountains falling into the sea and waters roaring. In other words, even if the very foundations of life collapse, God remains faithful. Governments may fail, money may fail, friends may fail, but God never fails His people.

Many people today are searching for security. Some trust in wealth, some trust in politics, some trust in themselves. Yet all these things can be shaken. But the child of God has a refuge that cannot be moved. The Lord is our hiding place, our shelter, our strength when we are weak.

The Psalm then speaks about “the city of God” and says:

“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved.”

What a comfort to know that God dwells among His people. When the Lord is in the midst, there is peace in the middle of chaos. The enemy may rage, but God still reigns. Fear may knock at the door, but faith answers through the promises of God.

And then we come to one of the most powerful verses in all of Scripture:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Sometimes God tells us to stop striving, stop panicking, stop trying to carry burdens we were never meant to carry. The Lord is saying, “I am still on the throne. I have not lost control.”

Some today are exhausted from worry. Some are carrying grief, disappointment, fear for the future, or battles no one else sees. But Psalm 46 reminds us that God is near. He is not distant from your pain. He sees every tear, hears every prayer, and knows every burden.

The same God who held back the seas, who protected Israel, who raised Christ from the dead, is still able to sustain His people today.

So do not let fear rule your heart. Let faith rise again. When the world shakes, stand upon the Rock that cannot be moved. When the storm comes, run to the refuge of God. When anxiety whispers, remember the Word of the Lord:

“The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”

Church, our hope is not in man — our hope is in the living God. And because He lives, we can stand with confidence, knowing that no matter what happens around us, God remains faithful forever.

Amen.

God is a good God.

God knows, God loves, God cares.
