Psalm 66 – From Fire and Water to a Wealthy Place
Text: Psalm 66
There are some psalms that teach us how to pray, some that teach us how to repent, and some that teach us how to praise. Psalm 66 teaches us all three. It begins with a shout of praise, travels through the valley of testing, and ends with a testimony of answered prayer.
The psalmist looks back over life’s journey and sees the hand of God at every stage. He sees God in the victories, God in the struggles, God in the fire, and God in the water. What a comfort that is for the child of God! There is never a moment when the Lord abandons His people. He is with us on the mountain and in the valley.
The psalm opens with a call for the whole earth to worship the Lord. “Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands.” True worship is not meant to be silent and lifeless. The God who created the heavens and the earth, who parted the Red Sea, who raised Christ from the dead, deserves our highest praise. Worship is not merely a Sunday activity; it is the response of a grateful heart to a faithful God.
The psalmist then invites us to look at the mighty works of God. He remembers how God turned the sea into dry land and led His people safely through. God’s past faithfulness becomes the foundation of present confidence. When we remember what God has done before, we find strength to trust Him for today. The God who delivered yesterday is still able to deliver today.
Yet Psalm 66 is not only a psalm of victory. It speaks honestly about hardship. The writer says, “Thou hast proved us.” He describes passing through fire and water. These words remind us that the Christian life is not free from trials. Sometimes we face disappointments, sickness, burdens, misunderstandings, or seasons when we cannot see the way ahead.
But notice what the psalm does not say. It does not say God abandoned His people in the fire. It does not say God forgot them in the flood. Instead, it reveals that God was working through the trial. Just as gold is refined in the furnace, God uses difficulties to strengthen faith, deepen character, and draw His children closer to Himself.
Many believers can testify that they learned more about God in the valley than on the mountaintop. It is often through tears that we discover His comfort, through weakness that we discover His strength, and through trials that we discover His faithfulness.
Then comes one of the most beautiful statements in the psalm:
“We went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.”
The wealthy place is not merely about material blessings. It speaks of God’s abundance, God’s provision, God’s peace, and God’s favour. The Lord never wastes a trial. He has a purpose beyond the pain. The fire is not the final chapter. The water is not the end of the story. God brings His people through.
The psalmist then turns from public worship to personal testimony. He says, “Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.”
Every Christian has a testimony. We may not all stand behind a pulpit, but we can tell others what God has done for us. We can speak of His saving grace, His sustaining power, His answered prayers, and His unfailing love. A testimony glorifies God and encourages others.
Finally, the psalm ends with thanksgiving for answered prayer.
“Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.”
What a wonderful conclusion! God hears the cries of His children. He may not always answer in the way we expect, but He never ignores the prayers of a sincere heart. His mercy remains constant even when circumstances change.
Perhaps today you feel as though you are in the fire or in the water. Take courage. The same God who brought Israel through the sea, the same God who sustained David, and the same God who raised Jesus from the dead is watching over you. Hold on to Him. Trust His promises. Keep praying. Keep praising.
The fire will not last forever. The water will not overwhelm you. The Lord is leading you through, and on the other side is the wealthy place He has prepared.
“Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.” Amen.
